Why is TV love always so complicated?

Call them cruel. Call them heartless. Call them talentless hacks who couldn't come up with a single original idea if their Mercedes hybrids depended on it. But for some reason, TV writers seem to get their jollies pitting two characters against each other over the same love interest.
It might not be as commonplace in real life, but the love triangle is a staple of any long-living television series—and those triangles often lead to squares, pentagons and the occasional googlogon.
